Guide to Experimenting with Response-O-Matic Submission Form

This experiment is let you experiment with an interactive online form to illustrate how dynamic web works. To be able to have interactivity you need to have a script - or a computer program - that provides it. There is an online service available to help you do the experiment. It's called Response-O-Matic. It provides the script that anyone can use freely to create a simple online form that really works. However you need to register first to Response-O-Matic before you can use its script.

Follow these steps to register to Response-O-Matic:

  1. Go to www.response-o-matic.com
  2. Click the "Get Started" button.


  3. In the "Sign Up" page you need to supply your Name, Email, and a Password of your choice (you will use this password when using Response-O-Matic's services). Click the "Sign Up" button, which will cause Response-O-Matic to send a confirmation email to your mailbox.


  4. Check your Mailbox. You will find an email containing a link (URL) like the one appears below.


  5. You need to validate your registration by clicking on the URL OR Copying and Pasting the URL to a web browser. You will then be presented by an Edit Form (see image below). Type in your Name and Email Address, then click on the "Save and Continue to Step 2" button.


  6. In the "Form Options" page (Step 2) select the "Show them our 'Thank You' page", which will display additional options. Type in the URL, where you will direct your form users to. You can use "www.petra.ac.id" or URL of your choice. Don't forget to check the box titled "Display the data they submitted on the 'Thank You' page".


  7. While still in Step 2, you also need to setup the email options. Check the "Email a copy of each form submission to you" box. Then type in the Email Address and Subject that you want to appear in the emails that will be sent to you as reports. Click on the "Save and continue to Step 3"button.


  8. On "Get HTML" page (Step 3) you will be presented with an HTML codes beginning with "" and ending with "". Copy the whole codes.


  9. The next step is to create a simple HTML file and insert the codes in between the <BODY> and </BODY> symbols.
  10. Open your newly created HTML file in a web browser. You should get a page like the one shown below. Now you can type in ANYName and Email Address. Then click on the "Submit Form" button.


  11. For security reason, Response-O-Matic will display a page that has an image with some numbers on it. Type in the numbers in the box provided (see example below).


  12. You will see a page indicating that Response-O-Matic is sending an email to you (see image below). When it's done, click on the "Continue" link.


  13. You will get a Thank You page like the one displayed below.


  14. Now the last thing to do is to check your email. You should get an email with a Name and Email Address that you entered in step #10. See an example of the email below.


That's it. You are done experimenting with an interactive online form. In this experiment you are using a script provided by Response-O-Matic. The script is stored in Response-O-Matic server.
